Pune: City police on Tuesday booked an offence against Sharjeel Usmani, a student leader of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), for the alleged provocative speech at this year’s Elgaar Parishad. A case has been registered on Usmani at Swargate Police Station on charges of promoting enmity between different groups following a complaint filed by a leader of the Youth Wing of BJP. The event was organised in Pune on January 30.

“We've requested police to also lodge a case against him u/s 124-A, IPC as he clearly stated he didn't believe in Indian state, Parliament & judiciary. We also said a case should be lodged against the organisers of Elgar Parishad,” Pradip Gawade, complainant in FIR was quoted as saying by ANI.

Usmani was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police in 2020 for his alleged role in the clashes that broke out in Aligarh Muslim University amid protests against the new citizenship laws. Usmani is currently out on bail.

Usmani was talk of the town after he gave his speech at the Elgar Parishad 2.0. The Elgar Parishad has been controversial from last three years after Maharashtra Police accused its organisers – a coalition of 250 anti-caste and human rights organisations of provoking caste-based violence in Pune’s Bhima Koregaon in January 2018.

Meanwhile, Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and current Opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis wrote to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, demanding action against Usmani.
