Pune: In a major operation conducted by Cybercrime Cell of Pune Police, gang of eight people were arrested suspected to have committed cyber fraud of worth Rs 216 crore.

Four engineers and a Marathi actor were arrested for allegedly conspiring to steal and sell data of inactive bank accounts containing amount of Rs 216 crore.

WHAT IS THE EXACT CASE

A team from the Cybercrime Cell received a tip-off that some people were trying to vend the data of inactive (dormant) accounts from two leading banks. Acting on the tip-off, a trap was laid in Maharshi Nagar area of the city on Monday. Initially six people were arrested. It included Rohan Mankani, son of Marathi actor Ravindra Mankani. Rohan has acted in few Marathi movies, TV serials. Two more people were arrested from Sinhagad Road.

Few people have been detained for questioning in the alleged fraud. At least 25 lakh cash, mobile phone, a car and bikes have been recovered from the suspects, police said.

The arrested are identified as Ravindra Mahadev Mashalkar (34), Mukesh Harishchandra More (37), Rajshekhar Yadaiha Mamida (34), Rohan Ravindra Mankani (37), Vishal Dhananjay Bendre (45), Atmaram Harishchandra Kadam (34) of, Varun Shrikadam Varma (37) and Vikaschand Mahendrakumar Yadav (25).

A case under Sections 419, 420 (Cheating), 120(b) (Criminal Conspiracy) and 34 (Common Intention) of Indian Penal Code and Sections 43/66 and 66(d) of Information Technology Act is registered. Cyber ​​Police Station’s Senior Police Inspector Rajkumar Waghchoure led the operation under the guidance of Pune Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta, Joint Commissioner of Police, Dr Ravindra Shisve, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bhagyashree Navtake and other senior officials.

All eight are remanded to police custody until March 20.
