Pune: The daily count of COVID-19 cases in Pune showed a sudden rise, with 5,741 new cases reported on Tuesday. This is the second highest number of new cases ever recorded in Pune district during the pandemic.

Restrictions are being imposed all around the state with number of districts in Maharashtra are under lockdown amid spike in COVID cases. While Pune remains one of the most affected district in the state currently, Mayor Murlidhar Mohol has ruled out the idea of imposing a lockdown.

Mohol while explaining the situation of the lockdown in the city said, “The COVID-19 situation in the city is under control. A study by Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) recommended stricter curbs instead of complete lockdown. Looking at the current situation it will not be wise to enforce lockdown. The number of patients is increasing but practically lockdown shouldn’t be imposed.”

“City’s present situation can be undertaken on three heads by forming health facilities for treatment of patients, along with ramping up the testing and scaling up vaccination here, while introducing more limits,” Mohol added.

Of the 5,741 cases in the district, 3,145 cases were reported from the Pune Municipal Corporation areas (Pune city) followed by 1,488 in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). On the other side, 1,108 cases were reported from cantonment and rural areas.

Local authorities witnessed 38 deaths in Pune district on Tuesday, taking the total death tally to 9,640.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported 134 deaths on Tuesday, the highest this year, and Pune had the maximum share.

The state has so far recorded 54,890 deaths, including the 1,301 that the state government has classified as those caused by other reasons in which coronavirus infection was only incidental.
