Pune: In a move to reduce traffic junctions during a red signal, the PMC City Improvement Committee (CIC) recently passed a resolution requesting the civic administration to permit free movement for vehicles taking a left turn.

Now commuters can freely turn left from signals at junctions before waiting for the signal to turn green.

Prasanna Jagtap, Chairman of City Improvement Committee said, "Turning left from the signals should be permitted. Many metro cities in the country has already allowed free left turns. It certainly reduces traffic congestion and thus is required to be followed in PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation) limits."

As of now, traffic light points on roads control movement of vehicles going in all directions.

The corporators of the city said that encroachment at traffic junctions and signal for vehicles turning left was leading to traffic congestion. So, all the chowks in the city should be cleared of encroachment and widened along with a trial for free left turn for vehicles.

The final consent to the proposal from the general body is yet to be approved. Once its done, it will be sent to the traffic polive department of the city.
