Pune: An explosion caused due to overnight leakage from an LPG gas cylinder in a flat in Dighi, 13 people have been injured. One person has sustained serious burns and is feared dead. The incident took place on Sunday (August 9) morning 6.30 am at Ashtavinayak Society in Mahadev Nagar at Dighi.
The explosion that happened in one flat also had an impact in the adjacent flat in the building. Out of the total injured persons, seven are children including a 2.5-year-old boy. The explosion took place in the flat owned by Dnyaneshwar Temkar, who is feared to be dead due to serious injuries in the blast.
Dnyaneshwar's wife Mangala (27), daughter Anushka (7) and son Shree Temkar (2.5) were also injured. Temkar family's guests - Mr and Mrs Satpute and their two children - who were staying in the same flat for the past two days have also sustained burn injuries. Temkar's neighbours identified as Mahendra Surawade, Archana Surwade (35), their daughters Akanksha (15) and Diksha (13) and son Amit Surwade (8) also received minor injuries from the blast.
According to Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Fire Brigade, they received a call on Sunday early morning about an accident in Ashtavinayak Society in Dighi.
Three fire tenders were pressed into action and Bhosari Fire Station deployed senior fireman Rajendra Gawali, Vijay Ghuge, Shravan Chimte, Abhishek Dige, Hanumant Puri and Anil Wagh who reached the location in a few minutes. Meanwhile, police also reached the spot and with the help of citizens, rushed the injured people to the hospital. After inspecting the site, fire officials ascertained the cause of the accident to be an explosion due to overnight leakage of LPG gas from the domestic cylinder.
Impact analysis of the blast revealed that it was so strong that a wall of the flat had broken and collapsed. The other household materials have been damaged completely. Fire Brigade officials suspect that the leaked LPG may have accumulated in the room overnight and when someone from the Temkar family tried to ignite the gas stove, the explosion took place.
