Pune: The demise of a 19-year-old girl, who was gang raped two weeks ago in Hathras (Uttar Pradesh), led to a nationwide outrage. Many activists and protesters added their voice to the chorus of condemnation.

In Pune, a group named Pune Against Fascism and Pune Yuva Kranti Dal staged a protest at the FC Road on Thursday against the Hathras gangrape. The protesters raised slogans against police and local administration and stated that the government must take stringent action to ensure that 19-year-old girl who died after being gang-raped by four men should get justice as soon as possible.

"What has happened in UP should not happen in any civilised society. I highly condemn this act of rape, basically it is a gang rape. Even her dead body was not rightfully handed over to her family. This is actually against the Hindu customs. Why is the Yogi Sarkar so afraid of handing the dead body over to the family members? I can't express my anger or grief in words," a protester was quoted saying.

"Holding a protest was a necessity today. If we don't stand against it, it will be a betrayal to a girl, to a society or womankind for that matter. So I think that all the people who are standing here have an idea about what is going on in the world. So we are just representatives for a society, as a society for those who don't know. This protest is not just justice for one girl, this is justice for all the girls who have been victims of this sort of crime or will be in the future. So we demand justice. We demand for certain laws to be changed and the mindset of the people. As we can see they are suppressing proofs, they are not burning the body, they're burning democracy. We the people of India are standing for democracy, which is why we're standing here," said another group of protesters.

According to the reports, the hurried cremation of the victim was meant to suppress protests and Chief Minister Yogi?Adityanath must resign, opposition political readers said, while also demanding the case be shifted outside of the state.

The slugfest fortified after the family of the 19-year-old Dalit victim alleged that they had been forced by police of the state to perform her last rites in the stealth of the night. The police stated they had the consent of the kin. As queries were raised on UP Police, it's intent in the case and unconcern towards the girl's family, Chief Minister of the State Yogi Adityanath announced that an SIT (Special Investigation Team) had been formed to probe the matter.
