Chenani: Axar Patel (five wickets) and Ravichandran Ashwin’s (three wickets) spin attack helped India win the second Test by 318 runs against England while levelling the four-match series 1-1 on the fourth day at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday.
Chasing the target of 482, England skipper Joe Root stood strong till lunch but his colleagues struggled to stay on the pitch with him as India's spinners ran riot. With this win India jumped to the second spot of the World Test Championship (WTC).
India knocked out openers Dom Sibley (3) and Rory Burns (25) as well as night-watchman Jack Leach (0) on Monday to set England back in chase. When the game resumed on Tuesday, Englishmen failed to impress as they were all out for 164. Moeen Ali's fiery cameo of 43 (five sixes, three boundaries) couldn't help Englishmen to stay on pitch for long.
Earlier, India in the first innings managed to score 329 thanks to Rohit Sharma's ton. Moeen Ali bagged four while Olly Stone managed three wickets in the first innings. Talking about England, the visitors were bundled at 134 as R Ashwin grabbed five wickets while Ishant Sharma and Axar Patel managed two wickets in their kitty.
In India's second innings, R Ashwin scored his fifth Test century as hosts tightened the noose around England in the second Test as they set England a target of 482. Ashwin scored 106 runs off 148 balls with the help of 14 fours and a six. Jack Leach and Moeen Ali for England scalped four wickets each.
