Racism row: Indian cricketers racially abused during Sydney Test one more time

The scenes at the famed SCG turned sour on Day 4 with Indian players complaining about few in the crowd of racially abusing Indian players

India's players were reportedly subjected to racial abuse once again from a section of the crowd on the fourth Day at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in the third Test against Australia.

India captain Ajinkya Rahane and other players spoke to the umpires during the second session on Sunday. The scenes at the famed SCG turned sour on Day 4 with Indian players complaining about few in the crowd of racially abusing Indian players.

During the 86th over, Mohammed Siraj came over and along with captain Ajinkya Rahane had a word with umpire Paul Reiffel. It looked like there had been some words said to India pacer who went back to field near the boundary. Both the umpires along with the referee discussed and asked the police to investigate promptly. Siraj also pointed out where the words were heard. The police involving asked a group of men to leave the stand.

On Saturday too bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj complained of hearing racist slurs while fielding near the boundary.“BCCI lodged a formal complaint with ICC match referee David Boon about two of their players Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj being abused by a drunk spectator,” a source told PTI.

REMEMBER MONKEYGATE?

13 years back, the racism row of “Monkeygate” had rocked India-Australia series at same ground. Andrew Symonds had accused Harbhajan Singh of racially abusing him and calling him a monkey. After a courtroom drama, Harbhajan was handed a three-Test ban. Later, he was cleared of the charge.
