Pune: Praj Industries has set a significant milestone in the field of bioplastics with the launch of India’s first demonstration facility for biopolymers.
This state-of-the-art unit, located in Jejuri near Pune, was inaugurated on October 13, 2024, by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (IC), Ministry of Science & Technology, alongside Dr. Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology, and Dr. Ashish Lele, Director of the National Chemical Laboratory.
The facility is based on Praj’s indigenously developed Polylactic Acid (PLA) technology and is a key part of the company's vision to lead the global transition towards bio-based products and a circular economy.
Known for its Bio-Mobility portfolio in the biofuels sector, Praj has now strategically expanded into Renewable Chemicals and Materials (RCM) through its Bio-Prism portfolio, with bioplastics like PLA at the forefront.
Spread across 3 acres, this cutting-edge demonstration unit integrates sections for fermentation, chemical synthesis, separation, and purification.
It has the capacity to produce 100 tons per annum (TPA) of lactic acid, 60 TPA of lactide, and 55 TPA of PLA. The project reflects Praj’s commitment to addressing the global plastic pollution crisis by promoting biodegradable and compostable bioplastics as alternatives to harmful fossil-based plastics.
During the inauguration, Dr. Jitendra Singh remarked, “Praj’s demonstration facility is a pioneering effort in advancing homegrown technologies to produce eco-friendly plastics. It exemplifies India’s technological innovation and commitment to tackling plastic pollution while supporting the goals of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make-in-India.'”
Dr. Rajesh Gokhale commended Praj’s efforts, noting their alignment with the recently announced Bio-E3 policy and the Bio-RIDE scheme, which aim to promote biotechnology for economic growth, environmental sustainability, and employment.
Dr. Ashish Lele emphasized the importance of shifting to biodegradable plastics to combat India’s growing plastic waste problem, as the country produces around 25 million tons of plastic annually, with much of it ending up in landfills or oceans.
Dr. Pramod Chaudhari, Founder Chairman of Praj Industries, highlighted that the company’s decision to venture into bioplastics during the COVID-19 pandemic marked a crucial turning point. "We are committed to making India a global bio-manufacturing hub and addressing the plastic crisis while ensuring a sustainable future for Vikasit Bharat," he said.
