But it’s a different story on screen. It’s pretty normal for inanimate objects to come to life in animated movies. In fact, we wish we could be friends with some of these objects too!
Let’s take a look at some of the cutest personifications of objects in movies:
THE SORTING HAT FROM HARRY POTTER
The Sorting Hat is an enchanted hat used by Professor Minerva McGonagall to sort students into the four Hogwarts Houses — Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. The hat tends to talk to the student who is wearing it to figure out what’s going on in their heads, judge their character, and accordingly assign them to a house where they fit in best. It also offers help to students when they need it. It originally belonged to Godric Gryffindor, but all the Hogwarts founders — Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff — bewitched it for sorting purposes for the school.
OLAF FROM FROZEN
Do you wanna build a snow man? Yes, but just like Olaf! First introduced in the highly popular Walt Disney film — Frozen, Olaf has since then become a favourite among people of all ages. Post the film, the summer-loving snowman got his own spin-off film called Olaf’s Frozen Adventure. At Disneyland, there was a talking audio-animatronic Olaf sitting on top of the roof of the cottage that was home to the Anna and Elsa meet-and-greet.
MRS POTTS FROM BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
Cursed by a powerful enchantress, the head housekeeper of the castle, Mrs Potts is transformed into a teapot. She is always looking out for her clumsy son Chips, who is always getting into trouble. She is considered to be the most reliable character in the Beast’s household, even by Belle. Mrs Potts is honest, self-righteous, intelligent, level-headed, gentle, and caring but she is also stern and pragmatic when need be.
LIGHTNING MCQUEEN FROM CARS
Cars (2006) introduced us to this handsome race car— Lightning McQueen, who is a winner on tracks and in life too. The character is not named after actor and race driver Steve McQueen, but actually Pixar animator Glenn McQueen, who died in 2002. Lightning McQueen’s number was originally set to be 57, Lasseter’s birth year, but was changed to 95, the release year of Pixar’s first film Toy Story. TOYS FROM THE TOY STORY
Kids not only form strong bonds with their favourite toys but are often known to spin elaborate tales around them. Pixar’s most popular film Toy Story was one such film that showcased this powerful bond and used animation to bring the childhood memories live on screen. Andy’s favourite toys Buzz Light-year, Woody, Bo Peep the shepherdess, Mr Potato Head, Rex the Dinosaur, Hamm the Piggy Bank, and Slinky Dog, among others, teach you how to live by the phrase ‘All for one and one for all.’
