Do you remember one of the world’s most handsome archaeologists - Indiana Jones? There is a generation of archaeologists who, to date, credit Harrison Ford dressed in the leather jacket, khaki trousers, work boots and fedora, to be their inspiration. Meanwhile fighting Nazis, getting in the way of mercenary treasure hunters, Shanghai crime bosses, and evil cults and travelling the world, were added motivations.
Even though the movie is set in the 1930s, the 1980s blockbuster - Raiders of the Lost Ark - is still a great influence on aspiring archaeologists. Although there are many things that Steven Spielberg’s movie got right, however, there are many of those that may not fly with the current audience as it did then. Things like white men being archaeologists, no consideration for natives or the preservation of the archaeological sites, and maybe even ignoring the safety protocols for the job. It remains one of the most-watched and loved archaeological movies of all times.
After the Raiders of the Lost Ark, many more adventures have taken place in Indy’s universe, but none has been as impactful and magical as the first one.
Style statement
He is undoubtedly one of the most handsome archaeologists on the big screen. Whether it was lecturing a class, infiltrating places of high danger, or strolling in Venice, Indy was a distinctive dresser. One can even consider him to be a stylist of the sorts.
Some of our favourite looks from the Indy series are - Grizzly handsomeness, Tweed master, and Sophisticated adventurer (yes, we named them!). It goes unsaid that the Grizzly handsomeness we are talking about is the archaeologist in his usually Panama hat, leather bomber jacket, white t-shirt, khaki pants and work boots. It’s one of his most iconic looks, so much so that it is one of the most famous Halloween costumes too! Meanwhile, when we talk about Indy’s Tweed master look, we are talking about Dr Henry Jones Jr’s choice of clothes when he gets ready to teach – a tweed three-piece suit. The teacher in Indy usually sports a sack suit cut with patch pockets, pleated pants, and a waistcoat accompanied with either a wool necktie or a bow tie.
Did you know that George Lucas’ originally boasted to Steven Spielberg in one of their earlier meetings for the film that Indy is better than James Bond? Well, sorry all the 007 fans, but it may be a tad true. You remember Dr Jones flaunting a dinner jacket, black vest, a tie and a red carnation in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom? Well, Jones (we’re glad that the initial Indiana Smith was later changed to Jones) has style, perfection, is quite a ladies’ man, is great on-field and can carry an evening ensemble with panache, so, yes, maybe he is at least at par it not better than James Bond (let’s not forget, he has the licence to kill!)
Indiana Jones 5
If you are an Indiana Jones fan and are missing him in action, fret not, Indiana Jones 5 is officially in production. Ever since the franchise’ last movie in 2008, there have been talks about the next instalment. It was, however, confirmed in 2016 that Indiana Jones 5 would eventually happen.
While it is for sure that Ford, who will be 77 during the production of the film, will once again be the fedora-sporting, bullwhip-using character who we so much! Other than Ford in the titular role, in April it was also announced that Doctor Strange actor Mads Mikkelsen would also be joining the cast along with other Marvel actors Toby Jones, who starred in Captain America: The First Avenger and Shaunette Renée Wilson, who appeared in Black Panther. Initially, there were reports of Indy’s son, Mutt, played by Shia LaBeouf, being a part of the cast, but sadly he won’t be joining his on-screen dad this time.
The movie was initially set to release in 2019, but the date was later changed to July 2020, which was further pushed to July 2021. Ever since then, no official date has been announced for the movie’s release.
While there are no revelations about the plot, it is common knowledge that the new movie will follow the events of the 2008 Kingdom of the Crystal Skull film. Since the 2008 film was set in 1957, there is a possibility that a new movie will be set in the 1960s. Well, we can be assured that the new movie will be as engaging as the rest of the Indiana Jones films.
