Golden Globe 2021: Netflix's 'The Crown' bags four awards

The Crown, well, has been crowned! The Netflix drama takes home as many as four wins. Read on to know who won:

Netflix's 'The Crown,' particularly its fourth season gained a lot of popularity, this led to six nominations in the Golden Globes 2021 from the drama series. To add to the excitement, ‘The Crown' bagged the best drama television series category at the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The series, nominated alongside HBO Max's 'Lovecraft Country', Disney Plus' 'The Mandalorian' and Netflix's 'Ozark', and 'Ratched,' had also won in 2017 for its first season.

The fourth season of 'The Crown' covered the period from 1979 to the early 1990s and it included Margaret Thatcher's tenure as prime minister and Lady Diana Spencer's marriage to Prince Charles.

Emma Corrin bags 'Best Actress in a Television Series' category for her portrayal of Princess Diana

Actor Emma Corrin rose to popularity with her portrayal of Princess Diana in The Crown’s season four. The uncanny similarity between the actress and the Princess became the talk of the town. So, it was no surprise when she got nominated for the best actress in a television series category at Golden Globe. And to each fan’s expectations, the 25-year-old won in the category.

The actor received an overwhelming response for the portrayal of the late Princess during her courtship and the initial years of her marriage to the Prince.

While accepting the award, Corrin gracefully said, "Thank you, thank you so much. Thank you so much to the HFPA for this incredible honor." After thanking her team and the fellow cast members, Corrin added a thank you to the Princess as well, and said, “... Most of all thank you so much to Diana, you have taught me compassion and empathy beyond any measure that I could ever imagine. On behalf of everyone who remembers you so fondly and passionately in our hearts, thank you."

Josh O'Connor wins ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama’

British actor Josh O'Connor has won the Golden Globe award for his exceptional portrayal of Prince Charles in 'The Crown'. Connor won the award in the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama.

In his acceptance, the ‘surprised’ actor said, “Thank you so much to everyone who makes The Crown what it is, I’ve had the time of my life making this show so thank you to everyone at Netflix and all the producers and the directors, out brilliant writer and creator Peter Morgan... To Emma Corrin, the best actress winner, you’re extraordinary, talented, funny, and a brilliant player of rock paper scissors. I love you to bits!”

This is the first Golden Globe award win for Connor and this was the first time he had received a nomination as well.

Gillian Anderson bags Golden Globe for the portrayal of Margaret Thatcher

The Crown continued its winning streak with Gillian Anderson taking home the award in the category of 'Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Supporting Role'. The actor portrayed British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the fourth season of the web series.

She received wide acclaim for her portrayal. In her acceptance, the actor said, “Firstly thank you very much for the Hollywood Foreign Press and my fellow nominees and to Peter Morgan for imagining that I could inhabit Mrs T and Nina Gold our casting director who believed him or vice versa however it works, to Peter Morgan for an exquisitely multi-dimensional character against the odd... ”

The 78th Golden Globe Awards took place nearly two months later than normal, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is, also, the first bi-coastal ceremony, with Tina Fey hosting from the Rainbow Room in New York City, and Amy Poehler hosting from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

The nominees for Golden Globes were announced on February 3 and Jane Fonda and Norman Lear were announced as the recipients of the Cecil B. DeMille Award and the Carol Burnett Award, respectively.
