The NEP (New Education Policy) has been approved by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday. The declaration was made by HRD Minister and Union Minister Prakash Javedkar.  The Ministry of Human Resource Management (MHRD) now has been renamed as Education Ministry.

The new policy will help in a slide of changes with the aim of making an education system that donates directly to renovating the nation, delivering high-quality education to all and making the country a world knowledge superpower.

The medium of instruction until at least Grade 5 but rather till Grade 8 and beyond, will be the home language, mother tongue or local language. Bagless days will also be promoted throughout the year for different types of activities such as arts, quizzes, sports and vocational crafts.

The policy states that 5+3+3+4 curricular model had been declared based on the cognitive-developmental stages of the kids rather than their age. This further divides the K12 years into Foundational Stage (age 3-8): 3 years of pre-primary plus Grades 1-2, Preparatory Stage (8-11): Grades 3-5, Middle Stage (11-14): Grades 6-8 and Secondary Stage (14-18): Grades 9-12.

The new education policy provides the students with improved flexibility and choice of subjects to study across different fields of arts, social sciences, sports, humanities and other vocational subjects.

Under the suggestions for institutional restructuring and consolidation, it has recommended that by 2040, all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) shall goal to become multidisciplinary institutions, each of which will object to have 3,000 or more students and by 2030 each or near every district in the nation there will be at least one HEI. Also, the objective will be to upsurge the Gross Enrolment Ratio in HEIs including vocational education from 26.3 per cent (2018) to 50 per cent by 2035.

The new policy also pushes for more holistic and multidisciplinary schooling to be delivered to the students.
