Pune: In a remarkable medical achievement, a lung from a brain-dead patient in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, was successfully transplanted into a critically ill patient in Pune, covering a distance of 1,033 kilometers in just three hours. This life-saving operation has given the recipient a new lease on life.
The patient, who was battling severe respiratory issues and a swine flu infection, required an urgent lung transplant after his lungs began to fail.
Thanks to a meticulously coordinated green corridor, the lung was transported from Raipur to Pune on time, making the critical transplant possible.
The donor, who was declared brain-dead at a private hospital in Raipur, had his organs donated by his family. The lung was allocated to a patient at DPU Super Specialty Hospital in Pimpri, Pune.
Given the urgency of the situation, the lung was flown from Raipur to Pune Airport and then rushed to the hospital with the help of the city's traffic police, who created a green corridor for its swift transport. The entire process took just three hours.
Upon arrival at the hospital, the transplant surgery was carried out immediately. Doctors reported that the patient responded well to the transplant and is expected to recover soon.
The patient had been receiving oxygen support through Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) due to his deteriorating condition, which made the transplant essential. This successful procedure marks the second lung transplant performed at DPU Super Specialty Hospital in the past two weeks.
Dr. Sandeep Attawar of DPU Super Specialty Hospital praised the teamwork and technology that made the rapid transport and successful transplant possible.
"Organ donation is a noble act, and thanks to this invaluable gift, we were able to save a precious life," Dr. Attawar said. "Our swift actions, coupled with advanced technology and skilled doctors, ensured the organ's safe arrival and successful transplant from Raipur to Pune."
