Pune: A speeding water tanker, driven by a 16-year-old boy, hit a bike on NIBM Road injuring two persons. The injured persons were women wrestlers exercising on the road when the incident happened on Saturday (June 29) early morning in Kondhwa.
The minor driver and the tanker owner, Mahindra Borate, have been taken into police custody. According to the police, the accident happened around 6:30 AM in front of Kondhwa Ever Joy Society on NIBM Road.
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officer Santosh Dhume, and his wife Geeta were driving their scooter on NIBM road. Geeta's girl students from her wrestling academy, were running on the road as a part of their daily exercise routine.
The speeding tanker driven by the minor, hit Dhume's bike after which Geeta fell on the road sustaining serious injuries. The tanker also hit the practicing girls on the road. Santosh Dhume rescued the girls under the wheels of the tanker. Meanwhile, citizens rushed to help the victims and apprehended the minor and the tanker owner.
The injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Kondhwa police have detained the minor driver and tanker owner Mahindra Borate, and the process of filing charges against the suspects is underway.
Recently, a speeding truck had killed a woman and injured her daughter-in-law in an accident on Gangadham road. Irate citizens had protested against heavy vehicles flouting rules, after which police had banned movement of heavy vehicles on Gangadham road.
Series of such incidents have been reported across Pune city including the one at Kalyaninagar in which a minor driver driving a luxury Porsche car had killed two techies. An engineering-aspirant girl was crushed by a speeding ST bus in Katraj, in another accident.
