Pune: The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, celebrated the 62nd anniversary of its Graduate Wing on August 4, 2024.
The Graduate Wing was inaugurated on August 4, 1962, by then Defence Minister of India, V.K. Krishna Menon. Since its inception, over 7,600 doctors have graduated from AFMC, serving as exemplary academicians, clinicians, scientists, and administrators within the Armed Forces and across public and private sectors both nationally and globally.
In recognition of its exceptional services to the Armed Forces and the nation, AFMC was honored with the President’s Colour by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, on December 1, 2023. Additionally, it received a Unit Citation from General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff, on March 18, 2024.
To commemorate the anniversary, Lt Gen Sandeep Thareja, Director and Commandant, Brig Mukhtar Alam (Retd), the first alumnus of the college, Maj Gen Giriraj Singh, Dean & Deputy Commandant, and other dignitaries laid wreaths at ‘Prerna Sthal’ to honor the brave hearts.
The two-day celebrations included debate and quiz competitions, as well as football, basketball, and cricket matches between alumni and medical cadets, showcasing their camaraderie and competitive spirit.
The 59th edition of the college magazine ‘Dhanvantari,’ featuring literary contributions from medical cadets, alumni, and faculty, was also released in the presence of Lt. Gen. Madhuri Kanitkar (Retd.), Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of MUHS, Nashik, and an alumna of AFMC.
Numerous veteran and serving alumni attended the event, reminiscing about their undergraduate days at this esteemed institution.
AFMC alumni have a significant presence both nationally and globally. Reflecting the celebrations at AFMC, alumni gathered at various locations to commemorate the founding day of their alma mater.
Lt Gen Daljit Singh, Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) & Senior Colonel Commandant, Army Medical Corps, extended heartfelt congratulations to all alumni, praising their remarkable achievements and enduring contributions.
Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, GOC-in-C Southern Command, conveyed his best wishes to the institution, its faculty, and cadets.
In addition to training accomplished doctors, nurses, and paramedical personnel, AFMC has conducted numerous outreach health and awareness programs in remote rural areas of the state.
