Pune Police are set to deploy state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based CCTV cameras across the city.

A total of 2,866 new cameras will be installed, marking the first time Pune will utilize AI technology in its surveillance systems. This initiative aims to monitor the growing number of serious crimes and keep a close eye on the activities of habitual offenders.

To support this, the state government has sanctioned a budget of ₹433 crore, ensuring that Pune will be equipped with advanced surveillance capabilities.

The AI-based cameras are expected to play a crucial role in deterring criminal activity by providing real-time data to the police. They will be equipped with facial recognition technology, which will immediately alert the police control room if a known criminal is detected.

The installation of the 2,866 AI-based cameras is part of a broader plan to upgrade Pune’s surveillance network. Currently, the city and its suburbs have 1,300 CCTV cameras in operation.

These will also be upgraded with AI capabilities, significantly improving the effectiveness of the city’s existing surveillance system.

The introduction of AI technology in the surveillance network will allow Pune Police to not only monitor local criminals but also track offenders across the country.

With the ability to recognize faces, these cameras will help the police identify fugitives. In case a wanted criminal is caught on camera in Pune, an alert will be sent to the authorities in real time.

The new AI-based cameras will be installed at key locations, including crowded areas such as railway stations, bus terminals, and public squares, where criminal activities are more likely to occur.

These cameras will even be able to identify criminals who attempt to evade detection by altering their appearance.

The project is backed by a ₹433 crore investment from the state government, reflecting its commitment to improving city security.

According to Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, the installation process will begin shortly, and once operational, these cameras will provide an additional layer of safety for Pune's residents.

"We are striving to create a secure environment by utilizing the latest AI technology to combat crime effectively," said Kumar.
