Pune: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is now under strict surveillance with the implementation of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS).
This advanced system, utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) based cameras and radar devices, will immediately enforce penalties for 17 types of traffic rule violations.
A command control system and data center have been established at Kusgaon in Lonavala to support ITMS. Additionally, a monitoring center will soon be set up at the Borghat police station area.
The Highway Traffic Management System (HTMS) installation at Talegaon and Khalapur toll plazas is underway and expected to be operational by October 2024, after which the entire expressway will be under ITMS surveillance.
Key Traffic Violations Monitored
The ITMS will monitor and penalize violations such as over-speeding, not wearing seat belts, parking on the highway, stopping in tunnels, riding two-wheelers on the highway, lane violations, using mobile phones while driving, vehicles without taillight reflectors, unauthorized number plates, and overloading.
Anil Kumar Gaikwad, Managing Director of MSRDC, stated that the ITMS will help enforce traffic rules and improve safety on the expressway. High-speed driving on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has caused numerous accidents, resulting in deaths and injuries.
To mitigate these incidents and ensure compliance with traffic rules, various measures have been implemented. As part of these efforts, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has introduced the ITMS system on this route.
The entire expressway from Pune to Mumbai will now be closely monitored, and any traffic rule violations will result in instant fines sent to the vehicle owner's mobile phone.
