Pune: In a recent rally for Datta Bharne, the NCP candidate for Indapur, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar criticized former BJP minister Harshvardhan Patil, who recently defected to the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) faction.
Ajit Pawar’s remarks underscored the growing tensions between political factions and targeted Patil's recent switch in loyalty.
During the rally, Ajit Pawar disclosed that there had been consideration for Patil to receive a governorship, a move Pawar said would recognize Patil’s contributions.
However, in a pointed critique, Pawar referred to Patil as a "defector," questioning his commitment to Indapur's development. “You have been elected four times, yet Indapur’s progress remains unfulfilled,” Pawar remarked.
Harshvardhan Patil’s recent shift to NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) faction sparked controversy when he suggested during the Loksabha election, "invisible hand" garnered support for NCP (SP) candidate Supriya Sule against NCP candidate Sunetra Pawar.
Responding to this statement, Ajit Pawar took issue with Patil's portrayal, recounting how Patil had provided assurances and welcomed Ajit Pawar’s support during the Lok Sabha election.
“He invited us to his home, hosted us, and now claims there was an invisible hand involved. But if that hand was for 'Tutari' (election symbol of NCP SP), where is the ethics? How can we trust a defector who doesn't stand by his own party?” Ajit Pawar questioned.
With the Assembly elections in Indapur approaching, a three-way contest is expected between Harshvardhan Patil, Datta Bharne, and Pravin Mane.
Pawar highlighted the gravity of Patil’s departure, remarking that BJP leaders had once proposed a legislative council seat for Patil. However, he noted that “Patil was unwilling to wait. So now, let’s settle the score with interest.”
