Pune: In what is becoming an alarming trend, Pune has witnessed a significant surge in sexual assault cases against women, with 265 rapes and 450 molestation incidents reported in the past seven months.
Once known as the cultural and educational hub of Maharashtra, Pune is now grappling with questions about the safety of its women and children.
According to statistics from Pune Police, an average of 38 rape cases and 65 molestation cases are being registered each month, raising serious concerns among the city's residents.
In August alone, 37 rapes and 60 molestation incidents were reported. This shocking data has prompted many to wonder if Pune is transitioning into a crime city.
The issue of women’s safety came to the forefront again recently when a young woman was abducted from Bopdev Ghat.
Despite the police's initiatives like the Damini Squad, Police Kaka (Police Uncle), and Police Didi (Police Sister), aimed at protecting women and children, these initiatives seem to be insufficient in curbing the rising tide of violence against women.
In a separate case, the accused in the Wanawadi rape incident broke down in court as he was remanded to five days in police custody. This case, along with many others, highlights the growing threat to women’s safety in Pune.
