Pune: A rise in prolonged cough cases among children has raised concerns among parents and health professionals alike. The increase is attributed to recent weather changes, a spike in airborne allergens, and viral infections, exacerbated by close-contact spread during festivities.

Doctors report that many children’s coughs do not respond well to conventional medications, with some requiring up to two weeks of treatment.

The nighttime worsening of these coughs has been likened to bronchitis or even pneumonia-like symptoms, prompting health experts to emphasize preventive measures.

Pediatricians and pulmonologists warn parents to take children’s cough symptoms seriously and not delay medical treatment, as some children are experiencing difficulty breathing and severe sore throats.

These conditions often lead to emergency hospital visits for treatment, especially following major festivals when respiratory cases tend to surge.

According to Dr. Datta Shete, a chest and allergy specialist, airborne particles like pollen, fungal spores, viral agents, and construction dust are leading causes of the persistent cough among children.

“Symptoms like sneezing and coughing are common due to the influx of allergens,” he stated.

“If the infection affects the throat, bronchitis can set in. Turmeric, known for its anti-allergic, antibiotic, and antiviral properties, can be added to children’s milk to help prevent symptoms. Warm salt-water gargles are also beneficial.”

To manage the current wave of coughs and respiratory symptoms, doctors recommend that parents maintain regular check-ups and avoid self-medication. Further, if symptoms worsen, medical professionals may recommend blood tests and X-rays to rule out complications.

Preventive Measures for Parents:

  • Regularly consult with a doctor and avoid self-prescribed medications.

  • Follow doctors’ recommendations for any required blood tests or X-rays.

  • Consistently administer prescribed medications as advised by healthcare professionals.

  • Limit children’s consumption of oily and outside foods, which may aggravate symptoms.
