Pimpri: Despite the Pavana Dam reaching its full capacity, residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad will continue to receive water on alternate days.
The municipal authorities have announced that this measure will remain in place until the completion of the Andra and Bhama-Askhed water supply projects, expected by 2026.
The Pavana Dam, which is the primary source of water for Pimpri-Chinchwad and several nearby villages, currently supplies 510 million liters per day (MLD) to the city.
Additional water sources include 80 MLD from the Andra Dam and 20 MLD from MIDC, bringing the total daily supply to 610 MLD. Despite this, the city has been under an alternate-day water supply schedule for the past five years due to efforts to ensure equitable water distribution.
Earlier this year, the dam's water levels had dropped to a critical 17% in June, following a dry spell. However, heavy rainfall in late July and early August restored the dam's levels, with the reservoir eventually filling to 100% by August 26.
Although the dam is now full, officials have stated that the available water is still not enough to meet the demands of the growing population, necessitating the continuation of the current water rationing schedule.
Assistant City Engineer Ajay Suryawanshi confirmed that the rainfall in the dam's catchment area reached 2,777 mm this year, slightly lower than the 2,882 mm recorded by the same time last year. Despite the ample rainfall and full dam, the city's water supply will remain on an alternate-day basis until the completion of the ongoing water supply projects.
