Pune: In a significant crackdown, Pune Police have shifted their focus towards individuals purchasing drugs, aiming to dismantle the city's growing narcotic network.
After a series of high-profile drug-related incidents, including the Lalit Patil drug racket and the seizure of MD drugs worth ₹1 crore in Tingrenagar, the Crime Branch has identified 119 people suspected of buying drugs. These individuals, many of them young, are now under police scrutiny.
The decision comes as part of a broader effort by the Pune Police to curb drug demand and break the supply chain that has tarnished the city’s image.
Traditionally, police actions have focused on arresting drug peddlers, but now, for the first time, those who buy and consume drugs are also being targeted. This initiative aims to instill fear of the law among users and disrupt the market for drug sales.
Pune’s reputation took a hit nationwide due to the Lalit Patil drug racket. Incidents like the Porsche car accident, the drug consumption video from a pub on FC Road, and the seizure of MD worth ₹1 crore in Tingrenagar have given Pune the image of a drug hub.
This has also impacted the Pune Police's campaign for a drug-free Pune. Consequently, the Pune Police have initiated a campaign to dismantle the drug supply chain.
Around 10 to 15 individuals involved in drug sales have been arrested, and based on their information, a list of customers has been prepared. These individuals will be summoned and interrogated by the police.
