Pune: Maharashtra Home Department has given the green light for the establishment of seven new police stations in the city. A total of ₹60 crore has been allocated for this initiative, which will also see the deployment of 816 additional police personnel.
According to Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, the operations at these new stations are expected to commence within a week.
The decision comes at a time when the city is facing significant pressure due to its expanding population and rising crime rates. The new police stations—located in Ambegaon, Nanded City, Baner, Kharadi, Wagholi, Kalepadal, and Phursungi—will ease the burden on existing stations, ensuring more efficient law enforcement across Pune.
"Given the city's growth and the increasing demands on law enforcement, these new police stations will help distribute the workload and enhance our ability to maintain law and order," said Commissioner Kumar.
The establishment of these police stations is expected to significantly improve the division of tasks among police personnel, ensuring better handling of law-and-order situations.
Commissioner Kumar emphasized that public safety would remain the top priority, with operations beginning during the Navratri festival, well before Dussehra.
For the past three to four years, there had been consistent efforts to secure approval for these stations, and with the funding now in place, work can proceed swiftly.
In addition to the new police stations, the Bund Garden Police Station will also see the construction of a new building, for which ₹25 crore has been sanctioned. This development reflects a broader effort to modernize and expand Pune’s police infrastructure.
Funding Allocation for the New Police Stations
The seven new police stations have each been allocated specific funds based on their requirements:
Kharadi Police Station: ₹7.50 crore
Phursungi Police Station: ₹8.81 crore
Nanded City Police Station: ₹8.60 crore
Wagholi Police Station: ₹8.75 crore
Baner Police Station: ₹8.60 crore
Ambegaon Police Station: ₹7.09 crore
Kalepadal Police Station: ₹10.24 crore
Enhanced Surveillance with 3,000 New CCTV Cameras
To further enhance security, the Pune Police Department is also set to install 2,886 new CCTV cameras across the city. This surveillance initiative has been granted administrative approval, with ₹433 crore allocated for the project.
The installation of these cameras will strengthen the city's ability to monitor public spaces and prevent crime. Key officials, including Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, Joint Commissioner Ranjan Kumar Sharma, Additional Commissioner Arvind Chawaria, and Assistant Commissioner Vivek Pawar, have been closely involved in pushing this project forward.
