Pune: District authorities have ordered closure of Bhushi Dam for tourists on Sunday (July 14).
The Lonavala area is currently experiencing heavy rainfall, with continuous downpours over the past 24 hours causing streams and rivulets to overflow.
Bhushi Dam, already at capacity, has seen an increased flow of water, leading to a strong current over the dam's steps. Due to the potential risk of accidents, and considering safety of tourists the administration had to take this decision.
Bhushi dam will remain closed to tourists until the intensity of the rain and water flow subsides. Authorities have also advised tourists to avoid dangerous spots in the Lonavala city area and the surrounding hilly regions. Additionally, visitors are urged not to stand under waterfalls or venture into risky areas near the mountains.
On Saturday, July 13, Lonavala recorded the highest rainfall of the season, with 216 millimeters of rain in the last 24 hours. This record-breaking rainfall has added to the already challenging conditions, necessitating the safety measures taken by the administration.
The heavy rain has significantly enhanced the appeal of Lonavala, attracting more tourists to the area. Known for its scenic spots, Lonavala has seen 216 millimeters of rain in just one day, setting a new record for this year. So far, Lonavala has received a total of 1,485 millimeters of rainfall, compared to 1,190 millimeters by this time last year.
The increased rainfall this year suggests that Lonavala might experience a surge in tourist activity. Popular attractions like Bhushi Dam, Lion's Point, and Tiger Point are expected to draw large crowds.
Lonavala police have repeatedly urged tourists to prioritize safety while enjoying the rainy weather and to be mindful of their surroundings and the well-being of others.
