Pune: In a major manhunt, Pune police have formed 25 teams to track down the suspects involved in the brutal gang rape of a college student at Bopdev Ghat.
The horrific crime occurred on the night of October 3, 2024, when the victim and her male friend were threatened with a machete. The suspects robbed the duo before committing the heinous crime.
The attackers forced the victim and her friend into submission by threatening their lives with the weapon. After the crime, they fled towards Saswad.
While Bopdev Ghat is a remote area with no CCTV cameras, footage of the suspects was captured as they passed through Saswad, and the police are using this to identify them. Based on the victim's description, sketches of the accused have also been released to aid the investigation.
The Pune Rural police are assisting in the investigation, but technical difficulties have arisen, particularly in mobile data analysis. Bopdev Ghat is known for its isolation, making surveillance and tracking more difficult. Police have requested that anyone with information about the suspects come forward immediately.
Simultaneously, Dr. Neelam Gorhe, Deputy Chairperson of the Legislative Council, has demanded the establishment of a permanent police outpost at Bopdev Ghat in the wake of this horrific incident.
"Violence against women and schoolgirls is a societal issue, not just a police matter. All sections of society need to work together to prevent such atrocities," said Dr. Gorhe.
She chaired a meeting with Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and senior officials to address safety concerns in the area. Dr. Gorhe instructed that not only Bopdev Ghat but also Dive Ghat, Vetal Hill, and NDA premises should have regular police patrols to ensure safety.
