Pune: The District and Sessions Court in Pune has remanded the 25-year-old accused in the Bopdev Ghat gang rape case to police custody until October 15.
The accused was apprehended by police from the Yerawada area of Kondhwa after evading arrest.
The incident, which took place on October 3, involved the gang rape of a college girl after she and her male companion were threatened at knifepoint by the accused and his accomplices.
According to the prosecution, the crime is of a severe nature, and police will be conducting both a medical examination and DNA testing of the accused.
The authorities are also working to seize the sickle and the vehicle used in the crime. The accused reportedly stole a gold chain from the victim after threatening her, and the police are making efforts to recover the stolen item.
Assistant Public Prosecutor Advocate Vijaysingh Jadhav presented these details to the court during the hearing. Jadhav further informed the court that the arrested accused is part of a larger group of habitual offenders.
While one of the suspects is in custody, others involved in the crime are still at large, and efforts are being made to track them down. The police are requesting additional time in custody to gather information about the absconding accomplices and to advance the investigation.
The court, after hearing the arguments, ordered that the accused remain in police custody until October 15 to facilitate further investigations.
Reports suggest that three of the accused hail from Madhya Pradesh and were involved in small jobs to make a living. However, they came to Pune with the intention of committing robberies. On the night of the crime, they deactivated their mobile phones at around 10 PM and consumed alcohol in a secluded area of Bopdev Ghat.
While preparing to rob, they spotted a young couple sitting alone and took advantage of the isolated location. They brutally assaulted the couple and, under the threat of a sickle, gang-raped the girl.
