Pune: In a stringent effort to curb the menace of ticketless travel, the Pune division of Central Railway has implemented a robust action plan, resulting in substantial fines from non-compliant passengers.
Over the past five months, from April 1 to August 31, the railway division has collected ₹9.75 crores in fines from a staggering 1,46,946 cases involving ticketless travelers, irregular passengers, and unbooked luggage.
The crackdown intensified in August 2024, when ticket inspections led to action against 19,950 passengers caught traveling without valid tickets. In total, fines amounting to ₹87,08,220 were imposed on 2,299 passengers for either traveling without tickets or having irregular travel documents.
Furthermore, fines of ₹42,930 were collected from 336 passengers who were found carrying unbooked luggage, further highlighting the division’s comprehensive approach to ensuring compliance with travel regulations.
The enforcement drive was conducted under the leadership of Pune Divisional Railway Manager Indu Dubey and Additional Divisional Railway Manager Brijesh Kumar Singh, with coordination from Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Dr. Milind Hirve. Their combined efforts have been pivotal in intensifying ticket checks and imposing penalties as per the law.
The railway administration continues to emphasize the importance of traveling with valid tickets and has urged passengers to comply with the rules to avoid penalties.
Under the Railway Act, ticketless travelers are subject to fines, and in cases of non-payment, imprisonment could also be enforced. The administration has reiterated its commitment to regular ticket inspections, underscoring that adhering to ticketing norms is crucial for maintaining order and ensuring the safety and convenience of all passengers.
