India has begun its nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive to mark the beginning of the end of the dreaded pandemic. Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually launched the roll-out of the vaccination drive on Saturday at over 3006 vaccination sites across all States and Union territories.

"Everyone was asking as to when the vaccine will be available. It is available now. I congratulate all the countrymen on this occasion,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi stressed the need to take precautions against the spread of coronavirus even after taking the vaccine. “I request you not to make the mistake of taking off the mask and not maintaining social distancing after getting the first dose because immunity develops after the second dose," he said.

PM Modi also paid tribute to the healthcare workers and warned people against falling for propaganda and rumours about Covid-19 Vaccine. He also gave a new motto – “Dawai Bhi, Kadai Bhi” (Vaccine as well as discipline)

The vaccines Covishield, developed by the Serum Institute of India, and Covaxin from the Bharat Biotech, approved by the Indian government, have been already transferred to all States and Union territories.

Three lakh people to be vaccinated today

Almost three lakh healthcare workers to be inoculated on the first day with the Covid-19 vaccines. Around 100 beneficiaries from the priority group will be given vaccinated at each session. Every beneficiary will need to receive two doses of the same vaccine, 28 days apart.
