Pune: Following a tragic Porsche car accident in Kalyani Nagar, Pune's traffic police have launched an intensive crackdown on drunk driving. Over the past month, the anti-drunk driving campaign has resulted in 865 individuals being penalized.
The city has been plagued by accidents caused by drunk drivers speeding at night, leading to numerous fatalities each year. The recent incident in Kalyani Nagar prompted the traffic police to take stringent actions against those driving under the influence.
To curb this menace, traffic police have established checkpoints around pubs, bars, and major roads every Friday and Saturday. Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Police Rohidas Pawar reported that since May 21, a total of 865 drunk drivers have been penalized.
The Mundhwa traffic division led the enforcement with 80 penalizations, followed by 76 in Chaturshringi, 68 in Yerwada, 63 in Sahakarnagar, and 59 in Vishrambaug. The lowest actions were recorded in Lonikand with one, Shivajinagar with five, and both Samarth and Vishrambaug with nine each, while Loni Kalbhor saw ten penalizations.
