Duplicate License Fees Hiked by RTO: New Charge Set at ₹650

Pune: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has announced an increase in the fees for obtaining a duplicate driver's license. Previously, the fee for a duplicate license was ₹400, but it has now been raised to ₹650, following an official directive recently issued by the authorities.

A driver's license is essential for operating any vehicle, and the RTO issues it in the form of a smart card once an individual turns 18.

If a driver's license is lost, damaged, or becomes unusable, the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, under Rule 32, allow drivers to apply for a duplicate license.

Applications can be submitted either online via the transport department's website or in person at the RTO, accompanied by the necessary documentation.

The increase in fees comes as part of a broader decision by the Central Transport Department to raise the charges for duplicate licenses in 17 states.

The "Sarathi" portal, which handles applications for new learning license, permanent license, license renewal, and duplicate copy of license etc., has been updated to reflect the new fee structure.

However, the fee hike has been met with opposition from citizens, who are urging the authorities to reconsider and reduce the increased amount.

It may be recalled that Pune RTO operations were impacted due to heavy rains in July 2024. Due to this, the schedules for vehicle fitness certificates, learner's driving licenses, and permanent driving license tests were revised.
