Pune: The Pune railway station is set to receive a state-of-the-art 'Electronic Interlocking' signal system, with an estimated cost of Rs 95 crore.
The project will commence on August 1st, with the first phase involving the construction of a new building at the site of the old goods yard. This new system aims to modernize the station's signaling capabilities.
Indu Dubey, Divisional Railway Manager, Pune stated, "The current RRI (Route Relay Interlocking) system has become obsolete. The new technology will prevent signal system failures. In the event of a malfunction, it will be easy to detect and rectify it immediately.
This will have a direct impact on passenger traffic. Once this work is completed, the existing RRI building will be demolished. The Railway Board has also approved this system.
The construction of the building will begin on August 1st. This is a very important project for the Pune station."
Benefits of 'Electronic Interlocking'
Signals will be given to the train with a click of a button on the computer.
Previously, a cabin man had to pull a lever to give the signal, followed by pressing a button on a panel.
The signal process will be completed in a matter of seconds.
The system will require minimal space.
Maintenance is very easy.
Signal malfunctions will be extremely rare.
If a malfunction occurs, it can be detected and fixed immediately.
To enhance passenger safety and reduce railway accidents, Pune railways is also developing a 'robot' designed to monitor and inspect railway tracks.
