Pune: Several students who had secured admission to engineering and other professional courses under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category have had their admissions canceled due to issues with their EWS certificates.
The controversy stems from the fact that the certificates were either not in the prescribed format or were issued in English rather than Marathi, as required by state authorities.
The problem has arisen because Tehsil offices, responsible for issuing these certificates, have recently started providing them in the central government format and in English.
However, the State CET Cell, which oversees admissions for professional courses, requires EWS certificates in the format specified in their admission guidelines, and crucially, in Marathi. The mismatch in expectations has led to a wave of admission rejections.
Students who applied with certificates issued in English are facing canceled admissions despite having provided the required documentation. For many students, the time given to provide certificates in the correct format and language was insufficient, leaving them at risk of losing a full academic year.
This situation has been particularly problematic for students admitted to courses like engineering, MBA, and MCA, where deadlines have already passed.
Although both the Directorate of Technical Education and the State CET Cell are aware of the problem, no decisive action has yet been taken to address it. As a result, students and their parents are expressing their frustration and anger, questioning why a resolution has not been reached.
