Dusane (43), a resident of Mahalgaon, Vaijapur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, was arrested in 2015 in connection with a murder case in Warje Malwadi. Since then, he had been in prison. On February 24, 2021, he was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined ₹5,000 by a sessions court.

Despite his initial good conduct, Dusane grew weary of the routine in the open prison and seized an opportunity to flee on August 19.

On August 21, during Bharat Bandh, a security deployment was in place. Female police officers Vedpathak, Lonkar, and Dolase were patrolling the Shivneri Road to Warehouse Corporation Road in Market Yard on foot.

Near Gate No. 1 of the Market Yard, they spotted a person standing suspiciously near a rickshaw. Officer Vedpathak had received a WhatsApp message about Raju Dusane's escape from prison, and the description matched the person they saw.
