Pune: Family court granted a divorce to a woman whose husband attempted to kill her by stabbing her with a sharp weapon. The husband, despite being served multiple court notices, failed to appear, prompting the court to rule in favor of the wife and approve an ex parte divorce.
The case revolved around the couple, Raju and Rani (names changed), who had a love marriage in 2013. The husband, a professional driver, and the wife, a homemaker, initially enjoyed a smooth start to their married life.
However, things took a dark turn when they moved in with the husband's aunt. After frequent disputes between the wife and the aunt, the couple shifted to a rented accommodation, but the husband's alcoholism and abusive behavior continued to escalate.
For years, the husband subjected his wife to physical and mental abuse, often demanding money to support his addiction. Despite the birth of their two children, his behavior did not improve. The wife eventually left and moved back to her parents' home for safety.
The situation reached a breaking point in March 2022 when, during a family function, the intoxicated husband stormed into the event, causing chaos. He was arrested but later released after promising to behave.
However, in a shocking turn of events, the husband arrived at his in-laws' home later that same month, wielding a sharp weapon. He brutally attacked his wife, stabbing her multiple times in an attempt to kill her. She sustained serious injuries to her hands, neck, and stomach.
The husband was charged with attempted murder. While he was in jail, the wife filed for divorce, citing years of abuse and the attempted murder as grounds for dissolution of the marriage. Despite being issued a court notice, the husband failed to present himself in court.
Family Court Judge B.D. Kadam granted the divorce, stating that the husband’s absence from the proceedings and his documented abuse justified the ruling in favor of the wife.
Advocate Sachin Kumar Gelda, representing the wife, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, stating, “The husband not only subjected my client to severe physical and mental torture but also tried to kill her. Justice has been served today, and we are grateful the court granted her the relief she sought.”
