Pune: The Pune police have launched a crackdown on fake non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating under the guise of human rights groups to extort money.

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has directed officers to investigate and take stringent action against these fraudulent entities.

The primary function of the Human Rights Commission is to monitor and investigate whether any government servant is violating human rights. However, it has come to light that some NGOs are using names and logos similar to those of national and human rights commissions.

Officials of these NGOs have been found threatening businesspeople and government officials. Complaints have been received about notices being sent to citizens under the guise of human rights organizations, followed by demands for extortion to settle the matter.

In response, the state's Home Department has directed police across Maharashtra to take action against such fake organizations. Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has instructed all Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs), and senior police inspectors to take action against the officials of these bogus organizations.

Shailesh Balkawade, Additional Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, "Police stations have been specifically ordered to act against these fake organizations that are involved in extortion. If citizens come forward with complaints, legal action will be taken against the concerned organizations."
