Pune: In a recent case of fraud, a woman from Pune was duped by a man she met on social media who claimed to be the Deputy Commissioner of the Nashik Social Welfare Department.
The accused, Ashok Bhosale, promised to polish her gold jewelry but instead swapped it with counterfeit pieces, cheating her out of jewelry worth 1.2 lakh rupees.
The incident took place on the evening of July 14 at Sadashiv Peth. The victim filed a complaint at the Vishrambaug police station, leading to a case being registered against Bhosale under Sections 318(4), 319(2), and 316(2) of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the police, the complainant received a friend request from Ashok Bhosale on Facebook. After she accepted the request, Bhosale claimed to be the Deputy Commissioner of the Social Welfare Department in Nashik. The two began chatting, and Bhosale gained the woman's trust.
Subsequently, Bhosale met the woman in Sadashiv Peth, Pune, and took her 15 tolas of gold jewelry, promising to polish and return them within two hours.
However, when Bhosale did not return after two hours, the woman checked the jewelry he had given her at a shop and discovered it was fake. Bhosale had given her counterfeit jewelry and taken her real gold jewelry, cheating her in the process. The police are continuing their investigation.
