Pune: The prices of essential vegetables such as garlic, okra, cluster beans, cabbage, cauliflower, and beans have seen a significant increase of 10 to 20 percent due to reduced supply. However, the prices of most other vegetables have remained stable, according to reports from traders.

On Sunday (September 1), the wholesale market at Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard received a total of 90 truckloads of vegetables from various states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh.

The influx included significant quantities of green chilies, cabbage, beans, drumsticks, carrots, groundnut pods, and garlic from these regions, ensuring a steady supply despite the rising prices.

Local produce from the Pune division also contributed to the supply, with significant quantities of okra, cluster beans, tomatoes, green chilies, bell peppers, peas, cucumbers, cabbage, cauliflower, red pumpkins, onions, and potatoes arriving from areas like Purandar, Parner, Wai, Satara, Indore, Agra, and surrounding regions.

Demand for Leafy Vegetables on the Rise

The recent rains have led to increased spoilage of leafy vegetables, causing a decrease in supply relative to demand. This has driven up the prices of leafy greens, with coriander, fenugreek, dill, safflower, and ambadi seeing slight price hikes.

However, the prices of other leafy vegetables such as spring onions, radishes, amaranth, chakwat, mint, and spinach have remained steady.

Fruit Prices Hold Steady

In contrast to the vegetable market, the fruit market has maintained stable prices for key items such as pineapple, lemon, pomegranate, oranges, sweet lime, watermelon, muskmelon, custard apple, papaya, sapota, and guava.

The market received substantial quantities of these fruits, ensuring adequate supply and preventing any significant price fluctuations.
