Pune: The city of Pune has been lashed by torrential rains, causing rivers to overflow and reservoirs to brim. According to Dr. Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting division of IMD, this is the heaviest rainfall Pune has seen in the last 32 years.
Kashyapi said "Today's rainfall is the most severe in the last 32 years. Rain is typically measured in millimeters, but the current situation demands that we measure it in centimeters due to the sheer volume."
"Rainfall ranging from 11.5 centimeters to 24.4 centimeters within 24 hours is classified as extremely heavy rainfall. Any amount exceeding this is termed exceptionally heavy rain. Certain areas in Pune have experienced exceptionally heavy rain, while many others have recorded extremely heavy rainfall."
Dr. Kashyapi predicts that Pune will remain under an orange alert, indicating that extreme heavy rainfall conditions will persist for the next 24 hours. This could lead to the release of water from reservoirs, causing waterlogging in low-lying areas.
In the past 24 hours, Tamhini Ghat recorded an astounding 556 millimeters of rain in just 24 hours. This torrential downpour significantly increased the water levels in the Mulshi Dam, with a rise of 3 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) within the same period.
Ambegaon Taluka experienced a record-breaking 551 millimeters of rainfall over two days, with 146 millimeters on Wednesday (July 24), and a staggering 405 millimeters on Thursday (July 25).

The old Pune-Nashik road was flooded at the Vel River bridge, necessitating the diversion of traffic to the new Pune-Nashik road. Potato farmers in the region are concerned that the excessive rainfall could damage their crops.
