Pune: J. P. Trivedi Memorial Trust Hostel trustee and a security personnel have been booked on charges of culpable homicide for their alleged negligence in the case of a student's death after he was asked to jump into the duct from a stalled elevator. The incident had happened in Shivajinagar area in March and the trustee has been booked after police investigation.

The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Ajay Ashok Mirande from Ahmednagar, who was a student at the Government Engineering College. The incident occurred at the hostel run by J. P. Trivedi Memorial Trust on Ghole Road.

The hostel trustee and supervisor Anjana Ketan Motiwala and security personnel Subhash Surve have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

On the evening of March 15, Ajay and his friends found themselves trapped in a malfunctioning elevator. Security guard Subhash Surve, instead of guiding them safely, advised Ajay to jump into the elevator's duct, resulting in severe injuries. Ajay succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The investigation revealed that hostel trustee and supervisor Anjana Ketan Motiwala failed to provide the necessary guidance to the security guard on managing such situations. Consequently, a case of culpable homicide has been filed against Motiwala, Surve, and the trustee of the J. P. Trivedi Memorial Trust.

Ajay's father, Ashok Madanlal Mirande, filed the complaint that led to the charges. Police Sub-Inspector Ajit Bade is investigating the case.

Recently a devastating fire broke out at the office and hostel of Nilaya Institute, an educational institution in Sadashiv Peth, resulting in the death of hostel manager Rahul Kulkarni. Fire brigade personnel had rescued 40 female students, averting a larger tragedy. The incident occurred in the wee hours of Friday (June 7). Police have urged hostel managements to ensure proper safety protocols to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
