Pune: A horrifying incident took place on Thursday night when a 21-year-old college girl, who had gone for an evening walk with her friend in the Bopdev Ghat area, was brutally gang-raped by three men who threatened her with a knife.
The attackers managed to escape after the crime, and the police have since launched a massive manhunt to track down the culprits.
The Pune police have formed 60 investigative teams to expedite the search. Over the past fifteen days, data from around 50,000 mobile phone users who passed through the Bopdev Ghat route has been gathered for technical analysis, in the hope of identifying potential leads.
In addition, police are questioning suspects previously involved in serious crimes such as molestation, rape, and robbery in the hilly and ghat areas of the city.
Efforts have been made to gather information from around 40 small and large villages near the crime scene. Investigators have questioned local dhaba owners, liquor sellers, and others involved in illegal activities to gather further clues about the culprits.
Although several hotels along the roadside have provided CCTV footage, the lack of full road coverage has posed challenges to the investigation.
Meanwhile, police forces from Saswad and Rajgad are assisting in the search. Authorities are working around the clock to apprehend the accused as soon as possible.
