Pune: The development plan for the historic Shri Kshetra Jejuri Fort has encountered a major setback following the discovery that the Public Works Department (PWD) granted administrative approval for a bypass road without obtaining necessary permissions.
The approval was issued without consulting District Collector Dr. Suhas Divase, who also serves as the chairman of the District Development Plan Committee. This unauthorized move has resulted in the immediate suspension of the tender process.
The Maharashtra state government had sanctioned a comprehensive development plan for the Jejuri Fort and surrounding areas, including the Shri Khandoba Devasthan and Jejuri city.
The project, with a budget of approximately ₹349.45 crore, is set to be implemented in three phases.
The first phase, valued at ₹109.57 crore, includes significant works such as the preservation and repair of the fortifications, temple structures, Deepmals (lamp towers), and other historic sites. Additionally, funds have been allocated for infrastructure improvements and landscaping.
A sum of ₹10.68 crore was approved specifically for a bypass road to facilitate access for Very Important Persons (VIPs). The project received approvals from a committee headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, followed by the Apex Committee's nod.
However, during the enforcement of the Lok Sabha election code of conduct, when the project was temporarily on hold, PWD engineers proceeded with the tender process without informing the district authorities, leading to the unauthorized administrative approval.
Upon learning of this, District Collector Dr. Divase promptly ordered the suspension of the tender process and emphasized the importance of following the guidelines issued by the Archaeology Department for such projects.
He announced that a new Executive Committee meeting would be convened to re-initiate the tender process and ensure that all procedures are properly followed before any work begins.
Local MLA Sanjay Jagtap has also raised concerns, urging the immediate cancellation of the unauthorized tender and ensuring that all future actions align with the approved development plan.
The Jejuri Fort, a significant pilgrimage site, is expected to undergo extensive development under this plan, which aims to preserve its historical and cultural heritage while enhancing the infrastructure for visitors.
The suspension of the tender process has momentarily paused these efforts, but officials are committed to moving forward in accordance with the law.
