Journalist Killed, Wife Seriously Injured in Wakad Hit-and-Run Accident

Pune: Journalist Sharad Gaikwad (42) died on the spot on late Sunday (July 7) night when a speeding truck hit him and his wife near Decathlon Mall in Wakad. The impact was so severe that the couple was thrown into the air before crashing to the ground. Govind's wife got critically injured in the incident and has been admitted to hospital for further treatment.

The accident caused a major traffic jam at the scene. The Hinjewadi police arrived at the scene and apprehended the truck driver, who is being investigated to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Sharad Gaikwad’s body has been sent to Aundh District Hospital for an autopsy.

According to the available information, Sharad Gaikwad and his wife were crossing the road around 10 PM on Sunday, heading from a temple towards Decathlon Mall.

While crossing the street, a speeding truck coming from Mumbai side struck the couple with great force, causing them to be thrown several feet into the air before hitting the ground. Sharad Gaikwad sustained severe head injuries and died instantly, while his wife was left critically injured.

Sharad worked as a journalist with the Live 24 Bulletin channel. The number of accidents in Pune is increasing daily, raising concerns about road safety. The process of filing charges against the truck driver was ongoing late into the night, with the Hinjewadi police continuing their investigation.

Recently, Akanksha Pardeshi, a pedestrian walking near Wakad bridge on May 23, 2024 was hit from behind by a speeding car. The car driver allegedly fled from the scene after the accident.

This incident came to light after a chilling video of the accident went viral on social media on June 11. The CCTV footage showed Akanksha getting dragged and hit by the car, which then crashed into the shop.
