Pune: Crime Branch sleuths of Pune City Police filed a petition to keep the minor involved in the Kalyani Nagar accident case in a juvenile home for an additional 14 days. During the hearing, the Juvenile Justice Board ordered to keep the minor in Juvenile Home till June 25.
The minor suspect, who was allegedly responsible for the deaths of two individuals while driving a luxury car under the influence of alcohol, was initially ordered by the JJB to be sent to a juvenile home until June 12.
With this period ending, the police filed an application requesting an additional 14 days in the juvenile home. The application was submitted by Crime Branch Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sunil Tambe, who is the investigating officer in the case.
In the absence of the regular judge, another judge presided over the hearing on June 12 (Wednesday). The presiding judge stated that the regular judge is necessary to hear the arguments and determine the extention of juvenile home stay of the minor.
Previously, the JJB had ordered the minor to remain in the juvenile home until June 5, which was later extended by seven days, making his stay valid until June 12. Counseling for the minor, including sessions on addiction, is ongoing.
The board was informed by the public prosecutor and police that releasing the minor could pose a threat to his life. The 17-year-old suspect has been charged under the Section 185 (driving under the influence of alcohol) and culpable homicide under Section 304 of Indian Penal Code.
The minor suspect is alleged to have killed two young engineers, Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Kosta, both 24-years-old, who were on their bike when the accident took place on the night of May 18, 2024.
