Pune: KEM Hospital in Pune has officially launched a state-of-the-art Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) and Cellular Therapy Unit, designed specifically for pediatric patients.

The new unit, which will handle both malignant and non-malignant disorders, will offer comprehensive care for allogeneic and autologous transplants under one roof.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Dr. Farrokh Wadia, Trustee and Director of the Renal Unit at KEM Hospital; Dr. Xerxes Coyaji, Medical Director; Shirin Wadia, General Administrator; Dr. Vishwanath Yemul, Medical Administrator;

Dr. Kannan Subramanian, Consultant Haematologist and Head of the Unit; Dr. Sarita Kokane, Consultant Paediatric Haemato-Oncologist; Sriram Yadav, Member of the KEM Hospital Society; and Jyoti Pillay, Senior Medical Social Worker, along with other hospital staff.

Dr. Kannan Subramanian, who leads the unit, highlighted that while it primarily caters to pediatric patients, it is fully equipped to treat adult patients as well.

The unit will serve patients with a range of conditions including leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, thalassemia, aplastic anemia, and primary immunodeficiency disorders. The facility will manage all stages of the BMT process, from stem cell harvesting to storage and infusion, supported by robust multi-specialty and critical care services.

“The BMT Unit, equipped with advanced technology and staffed by experts in hematology and oncology, as well as specially trained nurses, will provide specialized care and a holistic approach to treating blood disorders,” said Dr. Kannan.

“This new addition, alongside our established Haematology Department, strengthens our hospital’s capacity to diagnose and treat all blood-related conditions.”

Dr. Farrokh Wadia described the launch of the BMT Unit as a key milestone for KEM Hospital, underscoring their dedication to delivering comprehensive healthcare solutions with advanced technology and multidisciplinary support at affordable rates.

He explained the significance of bone marrow transplantation as a critical procedure that involves replacing damaged bone marrow with healthy cells or stem cells, which is essential for restoring the body’s ability to produce healthy blood cells and supporting overall immune function and health.
