Pune: Continuous heavy rainfall in the dam catchment areas has led to a significant increase in water storage. By 5 PM on Sunday (July 14), the Khadakwasla cluster (Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet and Khadakwasla dams) had accumulated 10.12 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic feet) of water.
This marks an increase of 1.45 TMC in just 24 hours, which is enough to supply water to Pune for one month.
The rain has been particularly intense in the catchment areas, with the Khadakwasla dam cluster, comprising the Khadakwasla, Panshet, Temghar, and Varasgaon dams, showing a notable rise in water levels.
On July 2, the Khadakwasla dam project had a storage of 4.55 TMC, which increased due to the heavy rain, filling the rivers and streams that feed into the dams.
On July 7, the storage level in the Khadakwasla dam project had reached 6.50 TMC. After a brief lull, the rains picked up again from Friday, leading to continuous heavy showers over the past two days.
By 5 PM on Saturday, the water level in the Khadakwasla dam project had reached 8.67 TMC. Further rain increased the storage to 10.12 TMC by Sunday evening, enough to supply the city for seven and a half months.
Comparatively, the total water storage in the Khadakwasla, Panshet, Temghar, and Varasgaon dams was 8.34 TMC on the same date last year. This year, as of July 14, the storage has reached 10.12 TMC, which is 1.45 TMC more than the previous year.
