Lohgad Fort Receives Enthusiastic Support for UNESCO Heritage Nomination

Pune: In a vibrant display of community spirit, the Lohgad Visapur Development Forum, operated by the Shri Shivaji Raigad Memorial Committee, organized various awareness programs at Lohgad Fort on Sunday (September 22). 

This initiative aimed to celebrate the fort's recent selection for the proposed UNESCO World Heritage nomination and received an enthusiastic response from local residents.

The events were organized under the guidance of both the central and state archaeology departments, highlighting the importance of preserving historical landmarks.

The day began with a motorcycle rally from Karla Phata to the foothills of Lohgad, drawing attention to the fort's cultural significance.

At the Shiv Memorial located within Lohgad, dignitaries offered floral tributes to the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, honoring his legacy. The traditional "Shiv Vandana" was performed as a mark of respect to the iconic Maratha king.

The event featured a keynote address by Dhananjay Chandratre, president of the Shiv Sevak Pratishthan, who emphasized the historical glory of the forts built by the loyal warriors of Shivaji Maharaj. 

"These forts are a testament to the establishment of Hindavi Swarajya. We must all take proactive measures to preserve this legacy," he urged.

Sudhir Thorat, the secretary of the Raigad Mandal, also contributed insights during the proceedings, reinforcing the community's role in supporting the fort's nomination.

Various Activities: To further support the UNESCO nomination, a signature campaign was launched, collecting public backing for the initiative.

Additionally, a painting competition was held for school students, allowing participants from the Sampark Balgram to express their sentiments about Lohgad through art. The Rotary Club of Talegaon awarded certificates to the young artists, encouraging their creative efforts.

Sachin Tekwade, the founder of the Lohgad Visapur Development Forum, expressed his concerns regarding the deteriorating road conditions leading to Lohgad. 

He called for urgent repairs to improve accessibility for tourists visiting the historic site, highlighting the importance of maintaining infrastructure that supports cultural tourism.

Amit Kumar Banerjee and Subhash Bhongade from Balgram offered their assistance, demonstrating strong local collaboration for the event. 

Among the attendees were Sudhir Thorat from the Raigad Mandal, archaeology officer Gajanan Mandavre, assistant development officer Sevak Thorat, and the sarpanch, Sonali Baiker, along with members of the Maval Automobile Association.
