Mumbai: Rivers along the Mumbai-Goa highway were flooded due to incessant rainfall for last two days due to which the highway has been closed at several locations for vehicular traffic. This has added to the woes of workers who are returning to their native places from Mumbai and have stuck at these locations sans any transport arrangement.
Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts have received heavy rainfall for past couple of days. Jagbudi, Vashishti, Savitri, Bavnadi rivers are brimming at the danger levels and if the downpour continues then several bridges over these rivers will have to be closed for traffic.
The Bavnadi Bridge was closed for vehicular traffic on Wednesday (August 5) morning. After Bavnadi, the Arjuna river bridge was closed for traffic in the afternoon. The local administration has ordered to close the bridge connecting Ratnagiri and Lanja for vehicular traffic.
Kajali river has crossed the danger level mark on Tuesday. The regular water level for Kajali river is 16.50 m but due to consistent rainfall the level has risen to 17.50 m. Since water is flowing 1 metre above the danger mark and has touched the Anjanari bridge, local administration has asked to close this bridge as it is an old structure.
Heavy rainfall has been reported in the last 40 hours in the region which has resulted in all rivers flowing above the danger level mark. As a part of precautionary measures, highway police and local administration has ordered to halt traffic at several locations along these rivers.
