Mumbai: The Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) of Mumbai Crime Branch arrested renowned car designer Dilip Chhabria in a cheating and forgery case. The crime branch sleuths on Monday also seized one of the cars belonging to Chhabria.

Chhabria is the founder of DC Design. He has been booked under sections 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery), 467 (forgery of a valuable security, will or authority to make or transfer any valuable security, or to receive any money, etc), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record), 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. The FIR against him was registered on December 19. He was picked up from his MIDC office by Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Vaze and his team.

He is the founder of India's most renowned car modification studio called DC Design, which is known for its forward and futuristic designs. Chhabria is also an avid automobile enthusiast and owns a range of luxury vehicles himself.

LOVE FOR THE CARS

A commerce graduate, Chhabria turned to car designing after he saw an advertisement in a car magazine. He went on to pursue his passion to the Art Centre of Design in Pasadena in the USA. Chhabria has worked for General Motors before returning to India.

Chhabria started a workshop at Marol and produced the ring shaped horn for the Premier Padmini car model. He has worked on several projects for Kinetic Engineering Limited, ETA Star Group, Coca-Cola, Mahindra and Mahindra, Girikand Logistics to name a few. Chhabria launched the DYPDC Centre for Automotive Research and Studies with the DY Patil Group in 2010.
