Pune: Senior cartoonist Mangesh Tendulkar (82), who brought a smile on peoples’ face with his creations, passed away following a brief illness in the wee hours of Tuesday in the city.
His last rites were held at the Vaikunth Crematorium in the afternoon. He was younger brother of the late Marathi writer-playwright Vijay Tendulkar.
Mangesh Tendulkar’s cartoons on various themes not only tickle the funny bone, but also provoke thoughts. Especially, his cartoons on the city’s traffic issues became popular. He used to stand at traffic signals in the city and distribute greeting cards giving message of safe driving among citizens.
Mangesh Tendulkar also wrote comic books. His articles have been published in various periodicals. Many exhibitions of his cartoons were held. He used to draw cartoons even at the age of 75 years.
Eminent citizens from all walks of life, including District Guardian Minister Girish Bapat, Mayor Mukta Tilak, Commissioner of Police Rashmi Shukla, Shivshahir Babasaheb Purandare, MP Vandana Chavan, musician Salil Kulkarni, Murli Lahoti, Raosaheb Gurav and Charuhas Pandit, paid tributes to Mangesh Tendulkar.
